Ortofon is celebrating a special anniversary this year as the company turns 100 years old! Founded in 1918, Ortofon has been a pioneer in the audio industry. Today they develop components for hearing aids and manufacture the world-acclaimed Ortofon cartridges for vinyl.

October 9, 1918

The Electrical Phono Film Company is founded by Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen with the objective of developing one of the world’s first synchronized sound film system.

1951

The company name Ortofon A/S is established, deriving from the Greek words “orto” (meaning “correct”) and “fon” (meaning “sound”).

1959

Ortofon develops the legendary SPU (Stereo Pick Up) cartridge primarily for professional broadcasting companies.

1981

The world’s first low mass magnetic cartridges are introduced, the LM10 and LM15.

1984

Ortofon ventures into the professional DJ industry with the silver colored Concorde Pro and OM Pro, combining sound quality and ruggedness.

1989

A wide range of new products are introduced, including The Night Club Series featuring easier cueing, improved styli, better sound and a higher stability.

1999

Scratch cartridges for DJs are successfully introduced. Ortofon is a leader in manufacturing DJ Scratch cartridges and a sponsor of the Technics/DMC DJ World Championship in New York.

2003

Based on requests from international DJs, Ortofon introduces a new cartridge, the Concorde Elektro.

2005

Ortofon introduces the Concorde Q.Bert cartridge, co-developed by the legendary DJ.

2010

Launch of the revolutionary new DJ cartridge Ortofon-Serato S-120. It came with breakthrough technology designed to provide maximum freedom for DJ performances.

2015

Exclusive Series Anniversary MC A95 cartridge was introduced to commemorate the 95th Anniversary of Ortofon’s technical leadership in the audio industry.
