San Diego-based singer/songwriter Amber Jones is making waves in the R&B scene. Influenced by artists like SZA, Amber blends her soulful vocals with original songwriting for a unique sound that she describes as “R&B with a twist.”

Tell us about your artist name.

My birth name is my artist name, so I can thank Mom for that (laughs). It felt original to release music under my actual name because, after all, this is me.

Where do you call home?

I now call San Diego home, Encinitas to be exact. Never thought I’d end up on the West Coast, but here I am living in a sleepy surf town and I absolutely love it.

How do you describe your musical style?

I like to describe my musical style as alternative R&B, R&B with a twist. Combining different elements to make songs stand out. When people listen to my songs, I want them to say, “Wow, that tune was unique. Who is that? Let’s shazam it.”

What first inspired you to get into music?

I’d have to say that my dad is the person who inspired me to get into music. He is an extremely talented guitar player. Growing up he’d always bring his guitar out to the living room and play even when everyone else in the house was preoccupied by other things. He used to ask me to sing while he played. I was sort of vocal-shy as a kid, so Dad’s wishes were not always granted but I do believe his passion for guitar really rubbed off on me. As a teenager I found myself getting the itch to write music and create melodies, so pretty sure it came from Dad.

Is there an artist who has inspired you most?

SZA. Wow, that girl can sing and write lyrics. I love how she started off as a songwriter, making songs for other artists and used that to leverage her own artist career. Her story shows you that hard work is what precipitates desired results. Her grind is what inspires me the most.

What’s your favorite piece of music production gear or software?

I’m not much of a producer actually. My buddy Scott is the wizard behind all of my music, but if I had to choose, I would say Logic. I use it to record vocal ideas over tracks. It is super user-friendly and gets the job done!

What’s your favorite part of the music production process?

My favorite part is sitting with Scott and scrolling through all the production sounds. It’s like looking at a platter of amazing food options and then getting to take my pick on which one I think is going to taste the best. In my opinion, there isn’t anything better than that! It’s the creative process that is always super exciting for me.

Any future projects coming we should know about?

Right now, I’m just focused on writing more good music. No plans for an EP or album. I just want to keep putting out singles that are unique and leave people wanting more.
