He’s collaborated with artists from almost every genre. He’s produced music that covers sounds from trap to hip-hop to dancehall. He’s been nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, including a win for Radio Show of the Year in 2017. We’re talking about Diplo of course, a.k.a. Thomas Wesley Pentz.

In a new 8-minute documentary, the famous and impossibly cool DJ/producer takes us through both private and public moments in his impressive 14+ year career. Directed by Kyle DePinna, the short movie features appearances by artists like Snoop Dogg, Post Malone, M.I.A. Skrillex, Justin Beiber, and more.

Growing up between Southern and Central Florida, Diplo says he was influenced by music from classic rock to pop, but hip-hop is what inspired him “to create something out of nothing” using only samples. After moving to Philadelphia and continuing to learn to make music, Diplo’s first album, “Florida,” was released in 2004.

The next year he founded the label, Mad Decent, further pushing his unique style and bridging a gap between mainstream and underground sounds. Diplo eventually made the move to Los Angeles so he could grow the young Mad Decent label and work alongside the increasing number of artists and DJs flocking to the City of Angels.

Fast-forward to 2018, and you can find Diplo performing back-to-back shows around the country and collecting production credits on albums for some of the biggest musicians in the world. This past March, Diplo released his EP, “California,” with features by Lil Yachty, Santigold, D.R.A.M., Desiigner, and MØ, proving once again that he is wildly versatile and that there are no longer boundaries within musical genres.
