Roland’s TR-808 was released in 1980 and was one of the first drum machines with programmable rhythms. Famous for its “boom and sizzle,” the 808 wasn’t commercially successful in the beginning. In 1982 with the release of “Planet Rock” by Afrika Bambaataa, the 808 would create an unforgettable sound and go on to inspire hundreds of hits.
