Students in the UK Can Now Add DJing to Their Course Schedule
Share

Marching band, move over! Students in the UK ages 11 to 16 can now enroll in DJ courses for credit towards a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). As first reported by BBC, a new ruling states that DJ decks including turntables and CDJs are considered formal instruments and can be used to teach music theory, DJing, and electronic music production.

By adding DJ courses to the curriculum, instructors are hoping to get more kids involved in music programs. So far it seems to be working with sign-ups reaching the hundreds. Courses were created by brothers and professional DJs, Austen and Scott Smart.

“I think one of the most wonderful things we’ve seen through this last year is the students’ reaction to what we do. When we turn up, when we perform, and you’re getting something like 120 students enrolling at a time,” said Austen.

The brothers also have an education business called FutureDJs that connects professional DJ tutors with kids throughout the UK. The tutoring sessions cover everything from DJing basics to music production.

“With electronic music growing, FutureDJs is a business with big social impact on young people,” FutureDJs’ Facebook page states.
